Vietnam Son La G1 Arabica
Smooth, chocolate-forward Vietnamese Arabica with a rich medium-dark roast.
While Vietnam is famous for producing bold Robusta coffee, the mountainous province of Son La is quietly gaining recognition for something different—high-quality Arabica grown at altitude. This coffee showcases the softer, sweeter side of Vietnamese coffee, delivering a rich, comforting cup with chocolate depth, roasted nuts and gentle spice.
Roasted to a Medium-Dark profile, we’ve developed the natural sweetness of the bean while creating a fuller body that’s equally at home as an espresso or a smooth everyday filter coffee.
About the Origin
- Son La Province, Northwest Vietnam
Grown in one of Vietnam’s highest coffee-producing regions, where cooler mountain temperatures help Arabica cherries mature slowly and develop greater sweetness.
- Various Estates
This Grade 1 coffee is sourced from carefully selected producers across Son La, bringing together consistent quality from experienced growers.
- Washed & Polished Process
The washed process highlights clarity and sweetness, while polishing removes the parchment cleanly for a uniform, premium green bean before roasting.
The Son La Region
Son La sits in Vietnam’s rugged northwest, where coffee grows between 900 and 1,200 metres above sea level. Unlike the country’s more famous Robusta-growing regions, these higher elevations create a cooler climate that allows Typica Arabica cherries to ripen more gradually, developing balanced sugars and a smoother cup.
Many of the farms are small family-run estates, where coffee remains an important part of local agriculture. While Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee producer, origins like Son La represent the country’s growing reputation for specialty Arabica alongside its famous Robusta heritage.
Roast Profile
We’ve chosen a Medium-Dark Roast to highlight the coffee’s comforting sweetness while adding extra body and richness.
Rather than chasing bright acidity, this roast develops deeper caramelisation, creating a smoother, more rounded cup with excellent versatility across brewing methods.
Expect notes of:
- Dark Chocolate
- Roasted Hazelnut
- Brown Sugar
- Gentle Spice
The finish is clean and satisfying, making it an excellent everyday coffee that feels equally suited to a morning espresso or an evening mug of filter coffee.
Brewing Guide;
Espresso - This is where the roast really shines. Expect a syrupy body, rich crema and chocolate-led sweetness with a subtle warming spice.
Filter Coffee - A forgiving filter coffee that produces a smooth, low-acidity cup with plenty of body.
Pour Over - The washed processing keeps the cup clean while the medium-dark roast adds extra depth.
Milk-Based Drinks - This coffee pairs exceptionally well with milk. The chocolate and roasted hazelnut notes remain prominent through flat whites, cappuccinos and lattes, creating a naturally sweet and comforting cup without becoming bitter.
Why We Love It
Son La challenges many people’s expectations of Vietnamese coffee. Instead of the intensely bold profile often associated with Vietnam, this Arabica offers a softer, more refined character while still retaining the richness that makes Vietnamese coffee so enjoyable.
Roasted fresh to order by The Cracking Bean, it’s a coffee that rewards everyday brewing—smooth enough for a cafetière, rich enough for espresso, and comforting enough to become a regular favourite.
