Discover one of Africa's most underrated specialty coffees.

Malawi may not be the first country that comes to mind when people think of specialty coffee, but those who discover Mzuzu AA quickly understand why it deserves a place alongside East Africa's finest origins. Grown on the cool mountain slopes of northern and central Malawi, this fully washed coffee offers a wonderful balance of vibrant fruit, natural sweetness and a smooth, rounded body.

At The Cracking Bean, we roast this coffee to a Medium profile, allowing its distinctive berry character to shine while developing richer caramel sweetness and a fuller body. The result is a versatile coffee that performs beautifully as both filter and espresso.

The Mzuzu Coffee Story;

This coffee comes from the Mzuzu Coffee Planters Cooperative Union (MZCPCU), a cooperative representing around 3,000 smallholder farming families across northern and central Malawi. By working together through six local cooperatives, farmers have invested in shared washing stations, quality control and sustainable farming practices, enabling them to consistently produce coffees that meet international specialty standards.

Rather than relying on a single estate, Mzuzu AA combines carefully selected lots from farmers growing coffee throughout the surrounding highlands, including the Misuku Hills, Viphya Highlands, Phoka and Nkhatabay Highlands. These cool, elevated landscapes provide the perfect conditions for slow cherry maturation, producing coffees with greater sweetness, complexity and balance.

Why Malawi Produces Such Exceptional Coffee?

Malawi's coffee-growing regions benefit from a remarkable combination of altitude, climate and fertile soils.

High elevations between 1,100 and 2,000 metres.

Cool mountain nights that slow cherry development

Rich, well-drained soils.

Consistent rainfall followed by a defined dry harvest season.

Although Malawi produces relatively small volumes of coffee compared with many African neighbours, its focus on quality over quantity has helped coffees like Mzuzu earn a growing reputation within the specialty coffee world.

The Varieties Behind the Cup;

This coffee's distinctive character comes from a carefully balanced combination of three varieties.

Catimor contributes sweetness, body and resilience in the field.

Geisha (Gesha) brings elegant floral aromatics and refined fruit complexity.

Nyika (Cat129) is a locally adapted Catimor selection that thrives in Malawi's mountain climate while producing an impressively clean, balanced cup.

Together they create a coffee that's approachable enough for everyday drinking while still offering plenty of character for those who enjoy exploring different origins.

Fully Washed for Clarity:

After harvesting, ripe cherries are delivered to local washing stations where they're pulped, fermented to remove the remaining fruit, thoroughly washed and carefully dried before milling.

This fully washed process produces an exceptionally clean cup, allowing the coffee's natural sweetness and fruit character to remain beautifully defined even at a medium roast.

Tasting Notes;

Blueberry

Juicy berry sweetness remains the coffee's signature characteristic.

Red Apple

A softer, sweeter fruit acidity replaces the sharper green apple notes.

Honey Caramel

Gentle caramelisation during roasting creates a smooth, lingering sweetness.

The first sip delivers ripe blueberry sweetness before soft red apple brightness lifts the cup. As it cools, honeyed caramel notes become more pronounced, creating a smooth finish with just enough lively acidity to keep every cup refreshing.

Our Roast Approach;

We roast Malawi Mzuzu AA to a Medium profile.

This roast strikes a careful balance between preserving the coffee's distinctive origin character and developing greater sweetness and body. The berry notes remain vibrant, while the roast gently encourages caramel sweetness and a silkier mouthfeel, making it equally enjoyable as a filter coffee or a balanced espresso.

It's a roast designed for versatility without losing what makes this Malawian coffee unique.

Best Brewing Methods;

V60 & Pour Over Brings out layered berry sweetness, honeyed caramel and excellent clarity. Filter Coffee A wonderfully balanced everyday brew with a smooth finish.

Espresso Produces a sweet, fruit-forward espresso with rounded acidity and excellent balance. With Milk Blueberry sweetness softens into caramel and honey, creating an elegant flat white or latte.

Why We Chose This Coffee;

Every month we look for coffees that tell a story beyond the cup.

Malawi Mzuzu AA stood out because it represents everything we love about specialty coffee—smallholder farmers working together through a cooperative, careful washed processing, exceptional high-altitude growing conditions and a flavour profile that's both distinctive and incredibly versatile.

Roasted to a medium profile, it's a coffee that feels equally at home as a morning filter brew or an evening espresso, making it an ideal introduction to one of Africa's most exciting emerging coffee origins.
